At Miramont Family Medicine, We’re Here to Help
Getting started with losing weight can be a huge challenge. Should you choose paleo? Maybe try being vegan for awhile? Follow along with a fitness app? Take advice from people on Instagram? Do what worked for your friend? Workout every day? Every other day? Sleep more?
You get the point. There are dozens of different decisions to make when it comes to how you’ll approach losing weight.
When you visit Miramont Family Medicine, we can help you to make some of those decisions. We’ll discuss your family history in order to highlight any specific plans that you should try right away or avoid completely. We’ll also go over what’s going on in your life in order to provide you with some advice.
After all, don’t most diets recommend consulting with your physician before you start? That’s exactly what we’re here for.
Healthcare You Can Count On
Having said that, there are a few things we can tell you will always be good for you no matter who you are or what your weight loss goals are.
Drink More Water
This is the first (and easiest) thing you can start incorporating into your life right now. If you’re getting your liquid from coffee or soda, it’s okay to still drink those things (in moderation, of course), but you should also be sure that you’re getting plenty of water.
Buy yourself a large water bottle. Our recommendation is for something that’s about 1,000 ml or 32 oz and drink two of those each day. The key is to listen to your body as much as possible. The amount you need varies for each person, so follow the rule of thumb that if your urine is clear, you’re getting enough water and if it’s not clear, you aren’t.
We know what some of you are thinking–getting more sleep is much easier said than done! We understand that you have a busy life and that getting a full night’s sleep isn’t always possible, but you should strive to get as much sleep as you can.
If you’re currently sleeping less than 8 hours each night, you should make 8 hours your new goal. Sure, you can get by on 6 hours, but getting more than that is only going to help you feel better in the long run.
Be More Active
We’ll go into this in more detail at your visit with a doctor at Miramont Family Medicine, but in general, if your goal is to lose weight, the first step is being more active. A few common practices are to park at the far end of the parking lot when you come to work, take the dog for an evening stroll, or hop on a bike for a leisurely cruise.
The important thing to remember if you’re just starting is that you don’t have to push yourself to your limits. Instead, just focus on doing something. It doesn’t have to be a huge ordeal. It can even be as simple as getting up once an hour when you’re at work and doing a quick walk around the office.
