Now that summer is in full swing, many people are feeling the drive to get out there and get active. Of course it’s always a good idea to check with your family doctor before trying anything new just to be certain that it’s the right activity for you, but in today’s blog we wanted to encourage our readers to get out and spend some time in the great outdoors.

The benefits of exercise are numerous, but we’ve found that a lot of people just don’t want to go to the gym day in and day out, working with difficult equipment and being unsure about the results (not to mention the fact that gyms can be intimidating for newbies). If you’re a fan of the gym, then by all means keep going! All we’re saying is that it’s beautiful outside, so you may as well enjoy it while it’s here because before we know it we’ll be bundling up in heavy jeans and flannels to head to the local football game.

Here are a few tips for what you can do to get the most out of your summer:

Go for a Walk

At Miramont Family Medicine, we’re huge fans of the benefits of walking. Not only can you get to know your neighborhood a bit better, but it’s a great way for people of all health levels to enjoy some physical activity and get themselves in better shape. Whether you walk around the block a few times or decide to walk downtown for dinner, there’s plenty of benefit to be had from taking a stroll. If you have a dog, there’s even more reason to get outside because it will keep your pooch from destroying the house while you’re gone. It’s a win/win situation.

Play Catch with the Kids

The national pastime is baseball, so whether your kids are playing in local little league games or you’re just tossing the ball around in the backyard, it’s a great way to make the most of the summer. If your kids are competing, it’s an awesome way to reinforce the fundamentals and if they’re not interested in sports it’s still a great way to bond while doing something that’s not particularly challenging. Plus with how great the Rockies are looking this year, baseball may be something you’re interested in anyway (let’s hear it for Nolan Arenado)!

Take Up Biking

Is there a better place to bike than in Colorado? With incredible scenery in Parker, Wellington, and Fort Collins, there’s no reason not to have a bike. Whether you opt for a simple beach cruiser and stick to one of the many trails in the area or you grab a road bike and start commuting to work, we can pretty much guarantee that once you get started with biking it will become like an addiction. There’s nothing quite like feeling your hair blowing in the breeze while you pedal away, burning calories like mad. The great outdoors has a lot to offer, and for biking enthusiasts, you can see things you’ve never paid attention to before. Sounds like a good time to us!

Head Out for a Hike

Of course Colorado is also known for its hiking opportunities. Now that Highway 34 is open to Estes Park, you can head up for a weekend and spend some time in Rocky Mountain National Park, hiking the trails and getting a good view of our beautiful state that’s simply unmatched. A quick trip to Golden Ponds Park in Longmont is an easy drive away and it’s a great way to spend the day, enjoying the trails and taking in the beauty of the Rocky Mountains from a perspective you might not otherwise take the time to enjoy. Trust us when we say that hiking is a great way to kick it up a notch from your normal walk. The views alone make it completely and totally worth it.

Join a League

You could also opt to join an adult league to get a bit of exercise in. With softball and baseball leagues to suit people of all skill levels (and even a wood bat league if you’re particularly serious), you’re sure to find something that’s great for you. Of course you could also opt to take a martial arts class for adults. The whole point is to find something new that you enjoy that you’re not currently doing. It could be as simple as regularly scheduled basketball games at the rec center or as complex as organizing a kickball tournament for your friends. The sky is the limit, but getting out of your comfort zone and enjoying some type of competitive league play is sure to be a highlight of your summer!

See a Doctor First

No matter what you do (or what kind of shape you’re in) we strongly recommend making an appointment with your family doctor so you can be sure that you’re ready for anything that summer throws your way. Trust us when we say that engaging in one of these summer activities is going to help you get the most out of your summer and provide you with numerous health benefits as well. Whether you’re picking an exercising opportunity that allows you to spend some time with your family or you’ll be doing something for yourself, we think you’ll truly enjoy it.

Need to set up an appointment? Not a problem at all! Feel free to contact us online or give us a call at our location in Parker, Wellington, or choose from locations off of Drake or Snow Mesa in Fort Collins. Whether you’re coming in for a routine physical or have a specific question, the team at Miramont Family Medicine will take great care of you, working to get you prepared for whatever comes your way this summer. Now is the time to get out there and enjoy yourself, so get in touch with us today. We look forward to hearing from you (and hearing about your awesome plans this summer)!
